Kumihimo has been around for a very long time, however it wasn’t until more recently that the process was made extremely easy for new jewelry makers. Kumihimo is a type of Japanese braiding that creates strong cord by weaving many smaller strands together. The finished braid is both practical and beautiful, featuring unique patterns based on the jewelry maker’s choice of color and design.
Getting Started
If this is your first time working with a bead Kumihimo project, make sure you have at least one braiding disc on hand. These come in square and circle shapes and are designed specifically for this type of braiding. A few Kumihimo bobbins can help keep cords organized, but are not a requirement. Choose cords that are the same diameter until you become comfortable weaving with the disc. Also remember that a thicker starting cord will require more length than a thinner one.
Working with Kumihimo Patterns
Both the square and circle Kumihimo discs include three patterns. Additional patterns can be found online, however these three are a good starting point for a new jewelry maker. The cords are wrapped around the corresponding tab on the edge of the disc. The actual braid is formed through the center hole while the loose cord hangs around the edges underneath the disc. The layout for each braid will depend on the pattern being used. Continue the pattern until the desired length is achieved, then tie off the braid.
Enhancing Kumihimo
Kumihimo braids and beads go together well, which is why this is a great skill to learn and improve. The braid can be utilized as the base for a necklace or bracelet. The beads can also be added during the braiding process by sliding them onto individual cords. Experiment with the Kumihimo to discover new ways to enhance your beading projects!
