Flattering Necklace Lengths

Posted by Enchanting Beads on January 10, 2013 at 10:03 am

Necklaces come in a variety of lengths, and each one is suitable for different styles and occasions. You can use your skills at making jewelry to create different lengths of necklaces so that you have an even wider selection of accessories. You can also learn how to adjust a single necklace to make it longer or shorter.

Necklace Lengths

Short necklaces lie closer to the throat, and some may have a very snug fit. Chokers are usually designed to be 16 inches long, although you may adjust it to suit your needs. Necklaces that are 18 inches are known as a princess necklace. The length is perfect for turtlenecks, crew shirts and low necklines, which means that you can wear it throughout the year.

Long necklaces lie just above or below your chest. Matinee necklaces are 20 or 24 inches long, and they are ideal for business suits and evening wear. Opera necklaces are 30 inches long, and they can be worn as a single strand or layered as a double strand. Rope necklaces are 36 inches long and can be layered for extra strands.

Adjustable Necklaces

You can easily make your necklaces adjustable, which will give you even more variety while slightly changing the style of the jewelry. A necklace extender will allow you to add a bit of length to your necklaces. This can help make short necklaces more comfortable, or it may make a necklace that is hidden by your collar easier to see.

You may also choose to design your necklace using detachable sections. By crafting your necklace so that you can adjust it to the desired length, you can use the same piece of jewelry for a variety of outfits. You can also make one section of your necklace the appropriate length for a bracelet, which will give you a necklace and bracelet in one design.  Add sturdy loops or jumprings into the design, and then add an S-clasp closure to make a quick and easy bracelet. The extra versatility will give you even more freedom and choices.

Choosing the Best Length for Your Necklace

When you are designing your jewelry, consider the outfits that you will be wearing. Find a length that will complement the ensemble without becoming hidden or overpowering your overall appearance.  As you start making your necklace, start in the middle and work your way out. This will make it easier for you to find the perfect length for the style you want. Keep a necklace extender on hand so that you can adjust the necklace to match the top you are wearing at the time.

By becoming familiar with the different lengths of necklaces, you will quickly be able to find the most flattering lengths for your body type and wardrobe.

Daily Inspiration for Beaders

Posted by Enchanting Beads on January 8, 2013 at 10:01 am

While creating jewelry can be fun, it can also be hard to come up with designs. If this sounds familiar, then don’t worry. You are not destined to always struggle with your creativity. Inspiration surrounds you, and you simply have to find out how to use it to your advantage. Here are some ideas that you can use to get your creative juices flowing freely so that you are inspired daily.

Bowl of Beads

Find a pretty bowl or teacup that you would like to have sitting out on the table. Fill it with your favorite beads, clasps, stringing materials and other tools. When you sit down to relax or when your hands are idle, try stringing something together. If it turns out well, take a picture of it or keep it. If you don’t like it, take it apart and try something else.

Don’t worry about not finishing something out of the beading bowl. It is simply a fount of inspiration that will help you get ideas about what you might want to try. Use your photographs to help you remember what you liked before you sit down to make your next piece.

Change out your beads and findings regularly so that you can stretch your creativity even more. The frequency that you refresh your bowl is up to you. If you are feeling bereft of design ideas, then you may change the beads out more frequently. However, if you keep stumbling upon ideas that you like, you may keep the same assortment of materials on hand for a longer period of time.

Color Combinations

It can sometimes be surprising to discover which colors actually go well together. Try to leave your preconceptions at the door when you are making jewelry. Don’t hesitate to try colors that you don’t think will complement each other. When you layer them or combine them with other beads, you may be surprised at just how well they go together.

You can also look at fabric to get an idea of what colors to use in your beadwork. Many fabrics are made using different hues and shades. Look deeper than the surface to find the colors that make up your favorite blanket, sweater or jacket. Then try using those colors in a new jewelry design.

Inspiration is everywhere, but you have to make sure that you open your eyes and your mind to new ideas. Once you have the mental freedom to explore and experiment, you are much less likely to suffer from beader’s block.
